The current city of Essaouira owes its existence to sultan Mohammed Ben Abdellah, who decided in 1760, to build a commercial harbor on the Atlantic ocean, close to its capital city Marrakesh. He wanted to build in Mogador the most attractive city of his reign and solicited the help of French architect Théodore Cornut to manage to do it. He accepted and was strongly inspired by Saint Malo. So was born Essaouira, the “well-designed”.
The fortified city became an important commercial harbor, before leading its place to one a the most consequent towns as Tanger or Casablanca. Hippy destination during the 70’s, Essaouira knows a considerable touristic development since a few years.
Benefiting a from temperate climate all along the year, it is an “easy-going” city.
A particular atmosphere reigns in its alleys where artists, fishermen, and craftsmen mix up. Numerous new-comers permitted the rehabilitation of houses and the opening of luxury riads all over the medina, or modern hotels along the beach.
Essaouira is also renowned for its water sports thanks to the powerful winds blowing on the bay.
