Dar Les Cigognes
Luxury riad in Marrakesh
Dar Les Cigognes : A boutique hotel in the heart of the mellah
While on a tour of Morocco, an Anglo-Swiss couple fell in love with Marrakech. Living in London, and looking for a sunnier climate, they fell in love with the home that was later to become Dar Les Cigognes. The residence is named after the storks that perch on the ramparts of the Royal Palace located just across from the property. Centrally situated in the medina, the dar is only minutes away from the Badi Palace and the UNESCO world heritage site, the Djema el Fna square.
The dar was created from two traditional riads, houses built around a courtyard with citrus trees and a fountain. On the ground floor of the front riad are the public spaces that include a kitchen, dining room, library, living room, reception, office, washroom and wc, staff quarters and two large alcoves where guests may take tea.
Decorated with citrus trees and a tiled basin with a marble fountain, the courtyard is lovely.
Five guest rooms are located on the second floor, one of which is a suite. Each has its own well-appointed en-suite bathroom, with bath and shower facilities. The rooms are unique, with each drawing on a different aspect of Moorish artistic tradition.
A door in the staircase leads to a covered bridge, which connects the two riads whilst housing a shop with fine local handicrafts. The second riad has three guest rooms on the ground floor a swell as a hammam, which is reserved or the hotel clients only, as well as a small kitchen.. The home is built around a central courtyard, with a tiled and marble fountain, as well as three magnificent palm trees that reach the upper parts.
The owners and staff have a personal commitment to providing guests with comfort and a high level of personalised service, available at all hours. Guests are assisted in selecting and booking restaurants, guides, excursions, and leisure and sport activities in and around Marrakech, as well as farther afield.
From the roof terraces, the view of the Atlas Mountains is unimpeded.
With the assistance of renowned architect Charles Boccara ( Marrakech Opera), the owners brought the enchantment of the house back to life. In 2004, a second house, connected to the first by a covered bridge, was opened. Mr. Boccara worked his magic wand and two years worth of intensive restoration and refurbishment resulted in another chef-d’oeuvre.
